Sangam 2012- Wrap-up….

The annual conference of AIOUG is over now and I have also come back to my home yesterday night. I didn’t get any time to post about the updates of each day individually so this is going to be a cumulative post.

The conference has always been very good and so far, the level of the conference has gone up only with every passing year. This year, the keynote was a little changed as instead of a 6 hour presentation or something like that, a full day event was there hosted by Tom Kyte, Graham Wood and Andrew Holdsworth. They presented Real World Performance seminar which is presented by them already all around the world. It was an awesome event and despite being that it went for the entire day, I don’t think anyone was feeling tired or something while sitting in it. All the three guys need no introduction as they are among the best of the best when it comes to performance tuning of Oracle database. Though Tom and Andrew had to leave the same day, Graham stayed as he was presenting two another presentations the next day as well. Before the full day seminar, there was a presentation from Rich Niemic which was also very good. The presentation style and on-stage sense of humour of Rich is just superb! He was also going to give a motivational presentation at the end of the first day which I had to miss as I wasn’t feeling well. Besides all the tech talks, there was a lot of social networking happening as well , which is also a great benefit of such conferences. I met a lot of folks whom I knew already and also met few new ones too! Finally, day 1 was over!

Day 2 started with the updates about the AIOUG’s current updates from the staff of the board followed by the presentation of Graham Wood. Actually, there was another presentation happening in the adjoining room but this was the one which I was attending. Following it, there were presentations from Vivek Sharma, Joze Senegacnik. Both the presentations were really really excellent! It was for the first time that I was attending a presentation from my friend Joze and I must say, besides being a really really knowledgeable guy, he is an excellent speaker as well! The way he started off his presentation, having a little humour added in the opening slides, it was just so good! After Facebook, it was the first time that me and Joze finally met in the real world and I can just say this that he is not just an excellently knowledgeable guy in Oracle database but a very nice person as well. We spent some time sitting together talking about a lot of things once the conference was over before I finally said bye to him.

As I mentioned, this year, I was also going to present. This was going to be my first presentation at any public conference. Though I am in a profession where I do the same kind of thing every week but still, it was a little different than that and to be honest, I was a little nervous too. But than I remembered the advice given to me by my dear friend Hans Forbrich, which was that take a deep breath and just go for it and I did the same. I believe, I was able to pull off the presentation okay! In the room next to me, it was Murali Vallath  presenting so I didn’t expect too many attendees showing up in my presentation but to my surprise, the room was still almost full and since no one left in-between from the presentation, I guess they liked it as well. There were questions at the end and its a good sign that the topic was well received by the attendees. I shall upload the presentation soon here. I think, now since I have managed to break the ice, I shall try to keep the wheel rolling and shall present more often.

Overall, it was yet again two days filled with lots of learning and fun. I would like to say thanks and pass on my best wishes to the team of AIOUG for the next year’s conference. I am already looking forward for the next year’s conference as I am sure, it would be just as great as all the last ones!

AIOUG’s Sangam-2012-Registrations Open Now….

This is a quick post to mention that the annual conference Sangam for the All India Oracle Users Group is now having the registrations open. This year, its going to be bigger and better even than the last years since there would be a full one day Real World Performance seminar by Tom Kyte, Graham Wood(creator of AWR, ASH) and Andrew Holdsworth(senior director of Oracle Corp’s Real World Performance group) . You can have a complete read about all three keynote speakers here. In addition to this, there would be live demo sessions along with parallel tracks related to Database, Application Development, Oracle Applications, Linux and Java. And worth to mention that there would be an ample opportunity for social networking as well. So act now and register yourself-I just did!

AIOUG’s Sangam 2011 Wrap-up….

AIOUG(All India Oracle Users Group) has finished its annual Oracle user group conference Sangam on this Saturday. It was their 3rd annual conference from the time they have started and it was my 2nd year of attending it. Due to some personal issues of mine, I was a little doubtful that whether I shall be able to make for it this time or not and fortunately, I was able to and as expected, it came out to be a great event! Lots of learning, meeting celebrities of Oracle database world along with fellow attendees, out of which some were old faces and some were new, it was an in and out two days completely packed with just Oracle all around which , at least for me is just simply awesome!

Just like the last two years of conference, this year’s also was a having a lot of who’s who of the Oracle world! The keynote was by Arup Nanda who needs no introduction I believe. Arup is a VERY well known expert in the Oracle database world and is a very frequent contributor on various online forums as well as the author of several books. His top 10 new features article series, covering every new release of Oracle database, is among the most popular technical articles for DBA’s. I was very excited to meet him because I have had interaction with him through emails already  and this time, I was finally going to meet him in-person. I met him outside the keynote hall and he immediately recognized me too when I told I am Aman :-) . I must say, besides being so good in the oracle database, he is also a very friendly and nice person as well. It was an utmost pleasure to listen to him live for two days and I shall be looking forward to meet him any time soon.

The other very memorable moment(at least for me) was to meet and hear someone who is one of the most well known names in the Oracle database world, Rich Niemiec. I must admit, I never even thought in a dream too that I would be able to meet Rich and not just meet but would be able to see him speaking. And even more, be in a pic with him :-) . He mentioned that his book Performance Tuning Tips and Techniques would be coming soon covering 11.2. He gave two presentations, one on each day of the conference. I must say, his style  of presenting and wittiness is just amazing! I really hope and wish that I shall get a chance to meet him soon again sometime.

This time, the Sangam team had decided to run parallel tracks of Java and application development along with the database track. Since both are not my domain, I didn’t attend any sessions of those tracks except of Bryn Llewellyn, PL/SQL Product Manager which was about the 11g’s enhancements about Pl/Sql. It was a very good presentation. Both, the content and the presenting style of Bryn, made the whole one hour of the presentation filled with lots of goodies related to Pl/Sql introduced in 11g. Another presentation which I attended and didn’t know about the speaker before, was of Kuassi Mensah(blog|Google+|Twitter|Facebook|LinkedIn) who is also a product manager at Oracle corporation. It was my first time to hear him speaking and his presentation was a very deep one, about the tuning of Oracle net services. It was an hour filled with lots of technical content presented in a very good way! I also met Hemant Chitale whom I know from a long time as he is a fellow member and a very active contributor over OTN forums. In addition to this, he is also one of the tech reviewers for my book. Though we have had many discussions over the forum and through the emails, this was the first time when I had a chance to meet him. Hemant is a very knowledgeable yet very down-to-earth and humble person in nature and it was an absolute pleasure to meet him. Last but certainly not the least, I met (again) Murali Vallath(LinkedIn|Twitter|Blog) who is the president of AIOUG. Its always a pleasure to meet him and the amount of efforts that he and his entire team puts in to make the conference a success, are just beyond words and even more, he is a very nice, humble and so down to earth person!

This year’s Sangam was also special for one another reason and that was that my very close friend Neeraj Bhatia(Blog|Google+|Twitter) was presenting his presentation this year which was titled as Did someone say Capacity Planning?(slides are available for the download at his blog). This was the first time that he was presenting and I must say, he did a fantastic job given that it was his very first public speaking. Now, since he has got the ball rolling, its my turn now to do the same.

Besides the great presentations and speakers, the entire conference, in the terms of the logistics and facilities,  was also maintained by  AIOUG team. The venue chosen this time was very spacious and lavish. It was the Crowne Plaza hotel Banglore which had fantastic arrangements for both conference space and food. The staff was very friendly and the overall appearance of the place was very eye catching. There were demo booths from Oracle support where they demonstrated power of Oracle Exadata live! The goodies offered to the attendees were also very nice.

To sum up, Sangam 2011 was yet another a very exciting,fun-filled and yet a great learning experience packed within 2 days. A big thanks again to Murali and his entire team to pull it through and I am already looking forward for 2012.

Sangam 2010 Summarized….

As I mentioned before leaving that I shall be attending AIOUG’s 2nd user group conference Sangam. I got back today morning from the 2 day schedule. It was a fantastic event and definitely, presence of Jonathan Lewis was the key attraction of it. I am too small to say anything about Jonathan Lewis so would just say that it was my pleasure and honor to attend his two, half day sessions about SQL optimization and see in person that how great and knowledgeable he is! I can’t say enough about him except this that I was completely mesmerized by him, by his knowledge and his willingness to share it all with people like us! I always wanted to attend his session and it was just a dream come true that I got a chance at this user conference. It was Jonathan’s first ever visit to India and I am just so glad that I didn’t miss this golden opportunity. This was my first ever chance to see him presenting( have attended his webinars before) and all I can say is that he is just awesome! Here is a snapshot of him when he was delivering his session,

In addition to Jonathan Lewis, this presentation became so special for me since I got a chance to meet my friend and an Oracle ACE Director , Francisco Munoz Alvarez in person. Though we interact almost every day on various web platforms but this was going to be the first ever chance when I was going to meet him in person and I am just so glad that it happened in this conference where he came to gave two presentations. It was for the first time that I saw him presenting and he was just so good!  We also did spend some time after the conference was over munching snacks and discussing tons of things :) . It was just so good to meet him and I hope we do meet again very soon!  Here is a pic of him presenting at the same conference,

In addition to Jonathan and Francisco, the conference also had the presentations from Mark Rittman, Iggy Fernandez, Murali Vallath and Vivek Sharma. It was a high doze of hard core technical content for 2 days :) . Overall, it was a very good event and I am glad that I did attend it with my friends Amardeep Sidhu, Neeraj Bhatia and Ankit Goel. We had a great time there and I hope, it would be the same in next year as well.

I Shall Be At Sangam, Will You….

This is just a quick post to say that I shall be leaving today with Amardeep Sidhu , Ankit Goel and Neeraj Bhatia to attend AIOUG’s annual oracle conference Sangam which is happening at Hyderabad this year. If you are also attending, just come and say Hi! I hope it would be good two days of Oracle and just Oracle :-) . I am not presenting this time so I would have plenty of time to attend my favorite sessions and meet my friend, Francisco Munoz Alvarez and one of the best known Oracle guru’s in this world, Jonathan Lewis.

Its time for me to get going and do the last minute checks for ticket printouts and everything else. Next stop would be Hyderabad!
